PurposeDiscovering the heritage of our Scottish ancestors is easier today than ever before with resources available through libraries, bookstores, and the internet. One of the goals for the Clan Moncreiffe Society is to utilize these resources to locate information on our ancestors and make it available to our membership.

General HistorySir Fitzroy MacLean, Scotland, A Concise History, Thames & Hudson, 2000. First published in 1970 and revised in 1993 and 2000, this 248-page text provides an excellent background in Scottish history. Over 238 accompanying illustrations and maps complement the narrative, bringing the history to life.
James Halliday, Scotland – A Concise History, Steve Savage Publishers Ltd., 1990. A more abbreviated publication with a strikingly similar name, this text is currently available on-line at Electric Scotland: http://www.electricscotland.com/history/scotland/index.htm.
Arthur Herman, How the Scots Invented the Modern World, Three rivers Press, 2001. Combining narrative history with an argument of how the contributions of Scotland have influenced our everyday lives, this book provides insight and relevance uncommon in a history text.
Historical NovelsSir Walter Scott is widely credited with developing this genre of literature in his series of novels, most set in Scotland of the 18th century. His novels include:
Clans and TartansMatthew Newsome, Early Highland Dress, Scotpress, 2003. An excellent overview of historic Scottish attire, with practical advice for those interested (or confused by) in historically accurate costumes.
Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk, The Highland Clans, Barrie & Rockcliff (1967). Written by one of our own, this text describes each of the clans. Originally published with the clans presented in geographic order, a revised edition was published in 1982 listing the clans in alphabetical order.
Genealogy ReferencesDavid Dobson, Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations, 1650-1775, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983. Extensive alphabetical list of Scots with reason for banishment, dates and means of transport and destination colony. No Moncreiffes are listed.
David Dobson, Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, Vols. I & II. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1984. References to William Moncrief (immigrated to Salem, NY in 1764) and Archibald Moncrieff (Maryland merchant in 1818).
David Dobson, The Original Scots Colonists of Early America, 1612-1783, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1989. A compilation of individuals appearing in ships lists, including references to David, George and Robert Moncrieff.
David Dobson, Scottish Emigration To Colonial America, 1607-1785 University of Georgia Press, 1994. An excellent review of emigration patterns during four distinct time periods. Extensive references, bibliography and index of names. Only one Moncreiffe appears – David Moncreiff who emigrated to Darien in 1698.
David Dobson, Scots in Georgia and the Deep South, 1735-1845, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2000. References to Isabella and James Moncrieff in East Florida.
